Concepts of recycling: Introduction

In exploring the use of recycled material in my Jewellery i have established that the work is underpinned by a range of concepts.

They are (1) Upcycling (2) Conceptual purposes  (3) Appropriation (4) Bricolage.

The above mentioned concepts are simultaneously reoccurring factors which form the basis of the type of recycling i am engaging in.

In this piece i used found object signage to make a pair of (1) upcycled earings.

In a more recent piece focussing on this terms work i have constructed a (2) conceptual piece. It is a bracelet or (wristcuff) using part of a car cambelt combined with recycled silver.

Using an old tape cassette i used (3) appropriation to construct a buckle which i painted and set in resin.

Using a selection of found objects i created a  another belt buckle from a diverse range of materials
within my environment. The nature of working with materials within ones environment is known as (4) bricolage.

  1. Nice to come back and revisit a long haul of exploration, only to discover what i was really doing, not what i thought i was doing. I highly recommend any student who studies Art or design, to continue with there B-Tech. It is in this discovery process of inner reflection that you will be able to identify a broader understanding of your own practice. Much respect to to the Department of fine art and Jewellery design and the people who galvanised the way i think about my life and work today.
