Ive been looking at the content of my work more thoroughly, to gain understanding into the "Why"? aspect.
In the beginning i thought it was motivated by recycling which it clearly is not.
Anything bound by this definition is more accurately defined as up cycling, but closer to the truth my current style is related with my obsession with raw materials in the sense that they are quite literally what they are.
These materials are treated like a medium, like clay is to potters or oil is to Artists, and if i had said as oil is to BP (that would have also made sense)
When i made Jewellery ten years ago, I would say i was a good Jeweller, and most of my materials had to be prepared by hand, like the preparation of silver plate and wire. Another point is that most of the aesthetic qualities, was defined by honed in craftsmanship, and an obsession for highly polished mirror finishes.
What binds my old style and my new style is the reference to found objects.
I used to make highly clean and minimalist pieces taking inspiration from found objects from their forms for example, where as now there is a fondness towards the existing materials as a usable and tangible medium.
But still once again, the re occurring question is why this specific content.
Give it a name, Dam it! So i did, i've called it street Jewellery.
A few years ago i did label my work "recycled street wear" but then i thought i may be only catering for one mindset. I felt that because i was creating a brand using materials of such diverse content, that i didn't want to close others out who might identify with the materials from which the products were made.
But then again, who's to say that street wear is only for a specific age group. Or is it?
Understanding that my influences come from the street, then what is the drive behind my motivations.
I know that i am trying to achieve a rawness, by using materials that relate to elements within an urban environment, but theres simply got to be more.
Im getting the feeling that i'm trying to make street art inspired Jewellery.
Im trying to create pieces using debris from within that environment.
Good craftsmanship is a concern but shouldn't be seen as badly crafted thus confused with the rawness and tactility that the re contextulisation of objects perpetuates.
So i,m now faced with questions of how do i take it to the next level. How do i take the content of a collection of found objects to merge them into a feeling of street Jewellery.
Ive got a few ideas? Lets see what happens.
