Dusty,Durban based tattoo artist from i art ink was talking about being a tattoo artist. He said that "tattooing is a medium like oils or whatever", its not a case that he's doing it to provide for a specific market, its a means by which he can express himself as an artist.It is his chosen medium.
Recycled materials could be viewed in the same way. It is an accessible medium in which i use to express myself. It is not merely a medium to accommodate the common viewpoint of re connecting to the "Environment" for it having ecological concerns. but it is rather an environment which seeks to deal with a publicl and personal environment, thus im using it as a medium to express myself.
It is relevant to the point that it is recycled but that is not what is steering this ship.
The bricoleur uses anything in his environment that happens to be there.
His medium deals with any form of cultural detritus which is available to him, and that becomes his canvass of expression, his ink,paint,clay or whatever.
He uses those elements to begin the creative process and propel those ideas onward. It is a medium of now.
